My favourites: Naomi Scott - Speechless (Aladdin)

Me and some friends recently saw Disney's new version of "Aladdin" at the cinema and I really liked it a lot. I found it hard to take my eyes off of the gorgeous Mena Massoud who plays Aladdin. Marwan Kenzari who plays Jafar is really good looking as well. But that's not what this post is about, so let's get serious:

I like that Disney has modernised the story and gotten rid of the Arabian stereotypes from the original. I also like that Jasmine, played by the talented Naomi Scott, is given more of a voice this time around. I totally love the song "Speechless" that she sings as a response to society's demands on her to be seen but not heard. The song is beautiful and empowering, sort of like "Let It Go" from "Frozen".

My favourites: Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky (1987)

It's time for another one of my favourite tracks and this one just turned thirty years old: "I Should Be So Lucky" by Australian pop goddess Kylie Minogue. This and "The Loco-Motion" were the first of her songs I ever heard since they were played quite often on Swedish radio when I was a kid. However, I didn't really become a fan until the early two-thousands, after falling in love with eighties pop music.

Around the same time as I started listen to Kylie's eighties music, she made a huge comeback with the 2000 disco single "Spinning Around". I remember buying the CD maxi-single when I was in Dublin on holiday with my family. I fell in love with her newer material as well and since then, Kylie has been one of my all-time favourite artists.

But you know me, I'm a sucker for the eighties sound, especially by the brilliant production team Stock Aitken Waterman, so "I Should Be So Lucky" will always be my number one Kylie track. It always cheers me up when I'm feeling blue. The 12" remixes are amazing as well, especially "I Should Be So Lucky (The Bicentennial Remix)" where you really get to hear all the eighties sounds.

I also love the kitschy video with the retro special effects and the eighties hair and fashion. Check it out down below. "I Should Be So Lucky" was included on Kylie's 1988 debut album "Kylie", available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon UK and Amazon US. I also recommend the remastered and expanded deluxe reissue of the album.

My favourites: Modesty - One More Broken Heart (1987)

It's time for another one of my favourite tracks: "One More Broken Heart" by Swedish pop band Modesty. The trio was formed in the town of Gävle in the early eighties and consisted of Peter Ericson, Joakim Sundström and Pelle Nylén. I first heard about them in the early two-thousands, after discovering and falling in love with eighties pop music. A friend lended me an old VHS tape where their music video was included.

I instantly fell for the catchy synthpop track and the band's cool eighties look. It didn't hurt that Peter, the lead singer, was so good looking. Not long after, I managed to track down a CD copy of the band's first and only album, "Pieces Of Modesty". Some of my other favourites from that album are "Say A Prayer", "Big Beat" and "Too Late".

"One More Broken Heart" was released as a single in 1987 and charted on the Swedish music show "Listan". The song was written by Peter who still works as music producer and technician. Pelle is a songwriter and has written tracks for Steps, Carrie Underwood and Westlife, while Joakim lives in London and has worked as a sound editor on many international movies and TV series.

My favourites: Jessica Simpson - Irresistible (2001)

It's time for another one of my "favourite songs", and it's "Irresistible" by American singer Jessica Simpson. I think she's so under-rated as an artist. Sure, she might have started out as a Britney Spears clone, but she has a much stronger voice and has recorded lots of great pop tunes over the years.

"Irresistible" was the first single from the album by the same name, released in 2001. Here in Sweden it reached number seventeen on the singles chart, and the track was written and produced by Anders Bagge, from the jury of "Swedish Idol". Check out the video down below. I remember thinking it was so fierce when I first saw it on Swedish TV.

I love the cool R&B-pop sound that was so popular back then, and Jessica's voice is amazing, as usual. This fabulous pop track should have been a bigger hit. Give the song and the album a listen, it's available from iTunes, Spotify, Amazon UK and Amazon US.

My favourites: Samantha Fox - I Surrender (To The Spirit Of The Night) (1987)

It's time for another one of my all-time favourite songs. I became a Samantha Fox fan in the summer of 2000, when I first discovered and fell in love with eighties pop music. Her biggest hit "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" instantly became one of my favourites, but I soon discovered that she had loads of other masterpieces in her discography.

One of them is the 1987 single "I Surrender (To The Spirit Of The Night)" taken from her second album "Samantha Fox". The track was produced by Jon Astrop and became a hit in Europe. I really love the electronic sound, especially the drums, and Samantha really proves that she is indeed a good vocalist!

"I Surrender (To The Spirit Of The Night)" is available digitally on iTunes and Spotify, but I really recommend the remastered deluxe edition of the "Samantha Fox" album. It's fabulous!

My favourites: Kim Wilde - You Came (1988)

Welcome to the new part of my blog where I write about my all-time favourite songs. First out is "You Came" by the amazing Kim Wilde. The song is taken from the 1988 album "Close" and was released as a single the same year. It became a big hit in Europe. Here in Sweden it reached the number one spot on the Tracks chart.

In the summer of 2000, when I first discovered and fell in love with eighties pop music, "You Came" was one of the first tracks that caught my attention. I love Kim's unique voice, the strong melody and the electronic eighties sounds, especially the "handclaps". My favourite part is where Kim sings: "Cos in the space of a year, I've watched the old me disappear."

Check out the official video down below. It was shot during Michael Jackson's 1988 European tour, where Kim was the supporting act. I really love the typical late eighties hairstyle and outfits. In 2006, Kim released a new version of "You Came", but it's a little too rocky for my taste, so I'll stick with the electronic original.

"You Came" is available digitally on iTunes and Spotify. But I really recommend the remastered deluxe edition of the "Close" album. It's truly a masterpiece!
